Hygiene Hypothesis

There are lots of things that we couldn't explain in this mystery world.. Sometimes, we think that living in a clean environment is good for your health. That's why we find a lot of modern-day parents are very strict in raising their kids; forbidding them to play outside the house with dirt, sand, tadpoles etc.

Logically speaking, those children will grow up in their pink of health, true? But this is not always true in some cases. Sometimes being raised in a too clean, too overprotective environment can actually harm you.

It's a medical fact that allergic reaction or any other autoimmune diseases are so widely spread in the developed world, and almost none in the developing world. This is called The Hygiene Hypothesis..

Children raised in an ultraclean environment, are not being exposed to organisms that help them develop appropriate immune system. What a child is doing when he puts dirty things in his mouth is allowing his immune response to explore his environment.

Not only does this allow for ‘practice’ of immune responses, which will be necessary for protection, but it also plays a critical role in teaching the immature immune response what is best ignored.

But when this child has never been sick his/her entire life, how is his/her immune system gonna be strong enough to fight the infection? (Remember Claire Bennet in Heroes series?) So kids need to play outdoors and eat dirt.

So in the end, living in filthy environment isn't gonna be the problem, but clean living is. (^_^)
